How to test the gel temperature of HPMC

Actually, gel temperature is an important property when it comes to summer, especially when the temperature is very high because it affects the use of HPMC, and it reduces the property of water retention, so that’s why sometimes we add a little more HPMC than winter when HPMC is used in building materials. Now, let’s show you how to test the gel temperature.

1. testing equipment we need.

2. Test steps:

  1. get 0.5000 g HPMC
get 0.5000 g HPMC

2. put the HPMC into the beaker

put HPMC into beaker

3. add about 50 mL hot water into the beaker

put hot water into the beaker

4. put the beaker into the cold bath and cool it down

cool down

5. pour the solution into the volumetric flask with the capatcity of 250 mL.

put the solution into the volumetric flask

6. add the distilled water to make it up to scale mark

add water up to 250 ml

7. keep turning it upside down for more than 10 times.

turn upside down

8. pour 50 mL solution into the test tube

put solution into the test tube

9. heat the tube

heat the test tube

10. it starts gelling at 72 degrees

start gel at 72 degree

11. it totally gel around 82 degrees

total gel at 82

12. it is the gel.

gel

13. the gel disappears when it is cool down

gel disappear

So, the gel temperature of this sample is around 82 degrees, and it could works very well in building materials when it’s very hot, if you need high gel temperature HPMC, just contact us, hope this will help you.
