Many people may wonder what is the water retention of HPMC, and how to test the water retention of HPMC, and on this page, we will tell you.
1). What does water retention of HPMC meaning?
Water retention is an one of the most important property of HPMC, and it is also a concern when many drymix mortar manufacturers using HPMC, good water retention of HPMC could effectively improve the adhesion and sag resistance of the slurry. And please note that, the better the water retention, the better the quality.
2). What equipments do we need to test water retention of HPMC?
1. 0.0001g analytical balance
2. Thermostatic drier
3. 0.01g analytical balance
4. mould
5. fast and slow filter paper
3). Testing steps
Please note that since it is a control test, so we need to run two tests, and one test is did without HPMC on the left of the picture, and the other test is did with HPMC on the right of the picture.
- get 100.00 g gypsum powder for each beaker
- get 100.00 g gypsum powder
- get 1.5000 g HPMC for the right one
- only add retarder into the left beaker, while add retarder and HPMC into the right beaker
- stir the mixture
- weigh the weight of 10 pieces slow speed filter papers and record it
- get 80.00g water
- put the mixture into the plastic bag
- pour the water into the bag and keep it still for 90 seconds.

- put one piece of fast filter paper on the 10 pieces of slow filter paper, then put the mould on the fast filter paper, in the end squezze the solution into the mold and wait for 3.5 minutes
- take out the slow speed filter papers
- take out the slow speed filter papers with tweezers
- weigh the weight of the slow filter papers, and record it
- calculate the numbers, then get the result.
